Luxury Timepiece Buying Guide

Fellow followers, whilst travelling we have been meeting quite a few fellow luxury gentlemen and gentlewomen who asked us the same question: “how do I go about buying my first timepiece?”.

Rolex Submariner

In this article, we will be going through some of the basic steps to buying a luxury watch. This is a quick and easy timepiece buying guide. If you are in the market for a new luxury watch or a pre-owned timepiece, the basic guide to buying your first timepiece remains the same.

1. Budget

Firstly and foremost, your budget is the most important part to starting your journey. Timepiece prices range greatly so knowing your budget before getting into the research phase is very important, more importantly once decided stick to it. A good Swiss watch can range from as little as £500 and up to £5M! You can read our article on luxury watches.

2. Research

Once your budget is fixed, the second phase is the research. When you delve into the world of timepieces, you will quickly notice that there are multiple places from which you will be able to purchase your first timepiece. There are official retailers, second hand dealers and more and more online retailers.

Watchfinder store

A word of caution, we would recommend reading reviews of the places that you are planning on visiting buying your timepiece from as this is one of the best methods to find out if that dealer is genuine. You can read a good article that can help avoiding buying a fake watch.

3. Investment

A luxury timepiece is somewhat similar to buying a car. It is an expensive purchase that carries a price tag but also holds a sentimental value to the owner.

As with any form of investment, you will want to take care of your first timepiece. Insurance is a good start, as there are many brokers out there offering good deals. It is important to note that usual home insurance doesn’t necessarily covers luxury timepieces.

4. Warranty & Aftercare

One of the most important factors to take into consideration when looking at buying your first timepiece, if pre-owned, is whether it is still under manufacturer guaranty. Because of amounts of money involved in luxury watches, many resellers offer their own watch guaranty, but double check what this covers!

Another point to think about is the aftercare. A bit like a car, a luxury timepiece has many complicated movements that need to be regularly checked to see that everything is working correctly. Brands recommend servicing your watch every three to five years to make sure that everything is running smoothly.

Rolex Submariner Aftercare5. Water Resistance

One aspect that seems to confuse potential first time watch buyers is the numbers on the dial describing the watch’s water resistance. Here is a quick recap, but if you want to learn more here is a good article:

  • 30 metres water resistance will repel rain, but shouldn’t be submerged in water.
  • 50 metres water resistance can be worn for swimming
  • 100 metres for snorkelling
  • 200 metres for more extreme water sports.
  •  500 metres water resistance for water diving, although those specially designed for professional SCUBA diving might come with 1000 metres or more on the dial

6. Purchasing

Once you have finally decided your budget, whether you want a new or pre-owned timepiece and decided from which retailer you want to purchase from, it doesn’t end there!

Handing over a considerable amount of money for your first timepiece is no laughing matter. Every time piece is unique and even within a specific model, a year compared to another one, there could be minor changes which changes the timepiece.

It’s always worth trying before buying. Most establishments are happy for you to call and make an appointment so as you don’t feel rushed into committing.

In conclusion, buying your first timepiece is much like a journey on which you can learn a lot whilst making a sound investment. If you have any questions please do email us or get in touch on Twitter/Facebook and we will be happy to help you fellows out.

Introducing Watchfinder

Gentlemen and fellow followers,

We joined our fellows from Watchfinder on Thursday for a very special event at their boutique at The Royal Exchange in Bank. The master class brought together like minded gentlemen and gentlewomen to discuss the latest trends in the luxury watch industry.

Watchfinder Reader Event

We had the opportunity to meet the team from the Watchfinder at the event, who were kind enough to share with us their points of views on the watch industry and news about their new edition of the Watchmag (you can download their app here) . We also had the chance to see one of their watchmakers showcasing their art.

If you fellows are in the market and are looking to purchase a new timepiece or currently in the research phase, we would recommend you getting in touch with the gentlemen from Watchfinder. We came by the fellows from Watchfinder during our research for our first timepiece.

Rolex GMT Master

We opted for the classical Rolex Submariner Datejust for a few reasons. We were really interested by the history behind the Rolex Submariner. Designed for diving (up to 300m) by Rolex, the Submariner is known for its high quality, water resistance and corrosion. With the summer coming up, we thought it best to procure ourselves a luxury watch that would resist sea water.

Rolex Submariner

Another reason is that the Rolex Submariner is a good entry level timepiece for the fellows entering the luxury watch ladder. It won’t lose value over time and it could help with your next luxury timepiece acquisition. Our fellows at Watchfinder can help you with your upgrade since their moto is “Pre-owned Uncompromised”.

So Gentlemen, if you are interested in learning more about the latest trends in the luxury watch industry download their app here. If you are also looking to purchase your next luxury timepiece then visit our fellows at Watchfinder.

Introducing Mr PORTER & PORTeR

Gentlemen and fellow followers,

With London Fashion Week 2014 out of the way and now returning to your day-to-day, you may have seen the below cover at every newsstand since last week. This is PORTeR, the latest magazine launched by NET-A-PORTER, the online luxury fashion retailer. If you’ve never heard of it, the women in your life have. NET-A-PORTER.COM targets women with a flair for designer clothing, accessories and cosmetics – heck, women with a sense for luxe-living!

Mr Porter

But what of us Gentlemen?

This question did not fall on deaf ears. The NET-A-PORTER GROUP launched MR PORTER in early 2011 and have called it the men’s style destination. What you will find there is everything and anything to tailor your look. Familiar categories each week guide you through gentlemen clothing, shoes, men bags, luxury maintenance products, high end accessories and gadgets– every item a gentleman could need to round off his style.

Mr Porter

It doesn’t stop there. MR PORTER became more than just an online retailer of luxury goods for us fellow gents when it launched its very own online magazine called THE JOURNAL. This monthly online publication is very sleek. It jumps quite easily from a serious piece on ex-servicemen to the challenge of pulling off wearing a cardigan, this year’s favoured sneaker brands and why every man wants to be Bond. Its enjoyable reading and appeals to the modern man with luxury interests.

Aside from all the top notch designer insights, the daring cover stories, the wowing interviews, the dishy shoots and the inspiring fashion, MR PORTER can be explored for the mere aesthetics of the site. As an online experience it is quite fascinating – the design is neat, typography puristic, the space is used with calm aloofness and the colours are generously complementary without being boring. Wait a minute… could the site itself be the portrait of a MR PORTER?

Luxurymenblog liked the repeated use of each contributor’s title in the credits. Nice touch, Mr.

Introducing Holdall and Co

Gentlemen and fellow followers,

With December around the corner, most of us are starting to look into Christmas gifts ideas for our fellow gentlemen as well as juggling our busy schedules. From meetings, lunches, corporate events to diners with clients or colleagues, you’re always carrying important documents around, Ipad or that new Iphone 5S in Silver.

Holdall and Co

Our Fellows at Holldall and Co have found a solution for us busy Gentlemen during a time where organisation is of the essence – The Professional 14” Folio. Recently established, Holldall and Co is a luxury leather accessory designer made in England. Their objective: to introduce a new generation to the values of “made in England”.

Holdall and Co - Folio 14"

With the introduction of the Professional Folio, this is a perfect item for your important meeting documents as well as your Ipad or Macbook. The classiness of the design makes it both modern and dapper fitting with different gentlemen styles. Made in England from the best leather they also support small local businesses around the country.

In addition, if you are similar to us and only carry around cards rather than coins, the cardfold case is very useful. It’s very light, slim and fits perfectly in a blazer or suit jacket. The design is hand burnished with stained edges gives that dapper look and feel.

Holdall and Co - Card Holder

Since its cut out of the same leather as the Professional Folio, the quality of the leather has not been degraded and the cardfold case fits easily up to three cards and notes or business cards.

The Professional Folio” is available in 2 colours and 2 sizes (12” and 14”):

Holdall and Co - professional-14-chestnut-hiro-small

Holdall and Co professional-14-tan-hiro-small

  • London Tan, will suit a nice grey suit or a pair of chinos for that relaxed, yet important client meeting.

So Gentlemen, if you are looking for that additional accessory to give you the edge on other fellow Gentlemen, then the Professional 14” Folio is an item worth the investment.

Hublot Watches in London

Gentlemen and fellow followers,

This weekend, we decided to take a cultural visit to learn more about Hublot watches. We visited the Hublot London Flagship Store in Bond Street. We wanted to learn more about the different collections that Hublot had to offer.

hublot watches

For the fellow Gentleman who wouldn’t know the brand, Hublot, was the first luxury watchmaker that combined a precious underground metal (gold) with an above ground material (rubber). From this, Hublot waches developed the “Art of Fusion”, combining exotic metals with traditional Swiss watch making practices

H_LOGO_2011_POS

The store manager, a fellow gentleman, kindly took Luxurymenblog through the 3 main collections in detail:

  • The Bing Bang:

The Big Bang Collection is by far the biggest range available and holds over 130 unique and varied pieces. The “Big Bang”, introduced in November 2005 is the brand’s flagship timepiece which catapulted the brand into the most prestigious realm of watch making.

The collection combines unexpected materials including ceramic, carbon, titanium, tungsten, gold and diamonds and employ the most cutting edge technology.

Hublot Watches

Luxurymenblog’s favourite Hublot – the Big Bang Aero Bang Steel Ceramic 44mm

The Big Bang retains the original Hublot ‘porthole’ look and is available in 38mm, 41mm, 44mm, and 48mm sizes.

  • The King Power

The King Power Collection is bolder and a more striking version of the Big Bang models. The complex dials are made of several layers bringing life to the face of each watch. King Power watches are an exciting concept and at 48mm make a real statement.

Special partners of Hublot have their own designed timepieces, the latest one being of the world’s fastest man, the King Power Usain Bolt 48mm. The King Power collection uses contemporary materials including gold, ceramic, platinum and diamonds which make them stand out from the crowd of every day timepieces.

Hublot Watches

The latest King Power release – King Power Usain Bolt with only 250 pieces made

  • Classic Collection

The Hublot Classic Fusion is an evolution of the concept of the Big Bang. The art of fusion is a key principle behind the design and creation of Hublot. Classic Fusion watches feature the same technical boldness as the Big Bang collection, however with a more classical, attractive aesthetic feel to them.

Hublot Watches

The Ultra Thin Skeleton Watch by Hublot – The Classic Fusion Classico Ultra-Thin All Black 45mm

It is rare to find this type of timepiece that blends ceramic, gold, titanium, platinum and diamonds to make watches with such a stylish design. The Classic Fusion combines traditional Swiss watchmaking values with contemporary cutting edge methods.

So Gentlemen, when will you be buying your Hublot?

Daniel Wellington Summer Style 2013

Gentlemen and fellow followers,

Before packing our bags for the south of Europe, we were eagerly researching a new summer gentleman’s watch. We had a specific criteria, the watch had to be stylish, be a positive additional piece of our summer outfits as well as being preppy and elegant. It was a challenge! However after a few weeks of investigation, we came across Daniel Wellington’s watches. After visiting their Facebook (here) and Instagram pages (here), we really liked the look and feel of the brand.

Daniel Wellington Logo
We found the story behind Daniel Wellington very interesting. He was a man with a “colourful personality who had an inspiring ability to be gentlemanly, relaxed and unpretentious at the same time.” This fellow Gentleman used to wear his old Rolex on Nato straps which originated from the British Navy. This changed the style of the old rusty Rolex to a more modern and preppy look.

Daniel Wellington Watches Collection 2013

One of the added benefits of the Daniel Wellington watches is that the straps are interchangeable, meaning one day you can opt for a preppy look to go to the tennis courts and the next you can have a classic formal watch for that important client meeting.

Our personal favourite was the Canterbury with the silver ring colour as its fit very nicely with our summer preppy outfits. We have been using it both as a complementary piece to our outfits but also as an individual piece.

Daniel Wellington Luxurymenblog Canterbury Watch

The Summer Preppy Look 2013
: the watch goes very nicely with a pair of colourful chinos and boat shoes for any boat and pool party that we had planned in the South of Europe. Works wonders with a tan, blue chinos, navy boat shoes and a pink shirt!

The Meeting Back to Work
: Of course the different straps that are available, are a nice addition as with one watch, you can customise the look to become more formal and classical.

Daniel Wellington Gold Classic Look
Gentlemen, Daniel Wellington has kindly offered all Luxurymenblog followers & readers an incredible and exclusive discount of 15% when quoting “luxury” at the checkout until the end of September 2013.

Gentlemen, the summer isn’t over yet, there is still time to your upgrade your summer wardrobe!

Gentleman Summer Attire – Part 2

Gentlemen and Fellow followers,

We have been noticing quite a few of our fellows opt for a specific Gentleman summer attire called the sockless look. This has been the case since we have been experiencing for the second time, the so called “African Heatwave” which has finally brought us some warmth to the cold capital!

For those who weren’t familiar with the term, here is a simple definition from Stefano Imbert: “simply put it is men wearing shoes without socks”. Apparently this trend started back in 2012 and in New York during the winter period.

The Gentleman's Sockless Look, Gentleman Summer Attire

Although the British Summer could be considered by some as their winter, we have been observing our fellow gentleman summer attire and we have seen several distinct categories of sockless looks which we found to be very nice.

The Classic Gentleman Look

Sockles Brown Classic Look, Gentleman Summer Attire

The simplest of looks for us gentlemen and the most impactful. A definite Gentleman summer attire to have in ones wardrobe.

A nice pair of brown shoes or chinos, sockless of course, with the trousers slightly lifted above the ankle about 5-10 cm high. You can combine this look with either a white shirt and a brown belt (my personal favourite) or a blue shirt with a blue belt, if you are looking for a more formal feel.

The Black Sockless Look

Black sockless Look, Gentleman Summer Attire

Interesting combination for this look. I came across a fellow gentlemen at a party I went to in Mayfair this weekend who was able to combine a similar style. The black moccasin with a black pair of tight jeans rolled up definitely was a winning combination in our opinion.

Gentlemen and fellow followers, with the hot weather due to “return”, which Gentleman summer attire will you be adopting? Will you be adopting the sockless look to show off to your fellows?

Do let us know your thought on this look as we have been receiving mixed feedback.

Introducing…The British Belt Company

Gentlemen and fellow followers,

We have finally been experiencing the typical British summer. It also has been a busy few weeks, from club openings and parties to the Yahoo Wireless Festival in VIP. We’ve recently been in the market for a stylish gentleman’s brown belt. After two months of research, in which we have compared over 20 different styles, we came across a quintessentially British company that caught our eye, The British Belt Company.

British Belt company Logo

For our Gentlemen who haven’t had the opportunity to visit our fellow friends at the British Belt Company, they are experienced leather craftsmen dating back to 1946 bringing together traditional skills with the finest leather.

They offer a very interesting range of accessories, from the famous Harris Tweed pattern to braces and wallets. We acquired the “Burley Leather Formal Belt Tan” piece to add to our collection.

  • The “Monday Meeting Look”, featured the classic white fitted shirt, blue trousers as well as the Burley belt and boat shoes. The addition of the belt helped break the look from the white and blue, but added a sense of class due to the pattern of the belt. Ideal look for a summer boardroom meeting with the new clients.

British Belt Co - Formal Look

  • The “Saturday Preppy Look”, featured red preppy trousers as well as a white and brown stripped shirt, our new belt and brown shoes. Using the same belt with lighter colours tones down the formality of the belt. Ideal look when you’re planning an evening out with the fellow gentlemen.

Luxurymenblog - Preppy Look

We were really impressed with the quality of the leather and the last finishing points around the buckle. This adds that additional little piece of detail to the overall belt making it a unique piece in its genre.

Gentlemen and fellow followers, we definitely recommend you taking a look at The British Belt Company if you are planning to buy a quality piece for your wardrobe.
