Presenting Glashutte Watches at Harrods London

Gentlemen and fellow followers,

The summer is slowly coming to London and for us watch enthusiasts there are plenty of events happening. Glashütte Original, German Watchmaking Art since 1845, has set up shop in the Fine Watch Room of Harrods and is providing to us fellow Londoners, their expertise in manufacturing chronographs. The exhibition is on until the 24th of June 2015 so do go and visit them.

One of the main centre pieces is the “Wondertable” showcasing the individual components of Glashütte Calibre 37. The in-house chronograph movement Calibre 37 was presented for the first time in 2014.

The Calibre 37 is at the heart of two of their main timepieces namely: Senator Chronograph Panorama Date and the Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date. The movement was the first Glashütte Original had conceived and built inhouse specifically as a chronograph, power reserve of 70 hours and the simplified movement has increased stability which resulted in improved time keeping.

Fellow followers, should you be looking for a classic timepiece for that next important meeting do have a look at the Senator Chronograph Panorama Date. All hands are in blued steel and the dial is framed by an elegant bezel. The case is satin brushed and polished in either platinum or red gold. The Senator Chronograph Panorama Date fits well on a tailored suit.

If on the other hand you are looking for a timepiece which has a more sportier feel to it, then the Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date could be your next timepiece. It features a polished and soft cornered square bezel and the satin brushed case in stainless steel brings back the vintage look and feel. It is a nice luxury time piece for a less formal event and would go well with chinos and a shirt as the summer is just around the corner.

Luxury Timepiece Buying Guide

Fellow followers, whilst travelling we have been meeting quite a few fellow luxury gentlemen and gentlewomen who asked us the same question: “how do I go about buying my first timepiece?”.

Rolex Submariner

In this article, we will be going through some of the basic steps to buying a luxury watch. This is a quick and easy timepiece buying guide. If you are in the market for a new luxury watch or a pre-owned timepiece, the basic guide to buying your first timepiece remains the same.

1. Budget

Firstly and foremost, your budget is the most important part to starting your journey. Timepiece prices range greatly so knowing your budget before getting into the research phase is very important, more importantly once decided stick to it. A good Swiss watch can range from as little as £500 and up to £5M! You can read our article on luxury watches.

2. Research

Once your budget is fixed, the second phase is the research. When you delve into the world of timepieces, you will quickly notice that there are multiple places from which you will be able to purchase your first timepiece. There are official retailers, second hand dealers and more and more online retailers.

Watchfinder store

A word of caution, we would recommend reading reviews of the places that you are planning on visiting buying your timepiece from as this is one of the best methods to find out if that dealer is genuine. You can read a good article that can help avoiding buying a fake watch.

3. Investment

A luxury timepiece is somewhat similar to buying a car. It is an expensive purchase that carries a price tag but also holds a sentimental value to the owner.

As with any form of investment, you will want to take care of your first timepiece. Insurance is a good start, as there are many brokers out there offering good deals. It is important to note that usual home insurance doesn’t necessarily covers luxury timepieces.

4. Warranty & Aftercare

One of the most important factors to take into consideration when looking at buying your first timepiece, if pre-owned, is whether it is still under manufacturer guaranty. Because of amounts of money involved in luxury watches, many resellers offer their own watch guaranty, but double check what this covers!

Another point to think about is the aftercare. A bit like a car, a luxury timepiece has many complicated movements that need to be regularly checked to see that everything is working correctly. Brands recommend servicing your watch every three to five years to make sure that everything is running smoothly.

One aspect that seems to confuse potential first time watch buyers is the numbers on the dial describing the watch’s water resistance. Here is a quick recap, but if you want to learn more here is a good article:

  • 30 metres water resistance will repel rain, but shouldn’t be submerged in water.
  • 50 metres water resistance can be worn for swimming
  • 100 metres for snorkelling
  • 200 metres for more extreme water sports.
  •  500 metres water resistance for water diving, although those specially designed for professional SCUBA diving might come with 1000 metres or more on the dial

6. Purchasing

Once you have finally decided your budget, whether you want a new or pre-owned timepiece and decided from which retailer you want to purchase from, it doesn’t end there!

Handing over a considerable amount of money for your first timepiece is no laughing matter. Every time piece is unique and even within a specific model, a year compared to another one, there could be minor changes which changes the timepiece.

It’s always worth trying before buying. Most establishments are happy for you to call and make an appointment so as you don’t feel rushed into committing.

In conclusion, buying your first timepiece is much like a journey on which you can learn a lot whilst making a sound investment. If you have any questions please do email us or get in touch on Twitter/Facebook and we will be happy to help you fellows out.

Introducing Watchfinder

Gentlemen and fellow followers,

We joined our fellows from Watchfinder on Thursday for a very special event at their boutique at The Royal Exchange in Bank. The master class brought together like minded gentlemen and gentlewomen to discuss the latest trends in the luxury watch industry.

Watchfinder Reader Event

We had the opportunity to meet the team from the Watchfinder at the event, who were kind enough to share with us their points of views on the watch industry and news about their new edition of the Watchmag (you can download their app here) . We also had the chance to see one of their watchmakers showcasing their art.

If you fellows are in the market and are looking to purchase a new timepiece or currently in the research phase, we would recommend you getting in touch with the gentlemen from Watchfinder. We came by the fellows from Watchfinder during our research for our first timepiece.

Rolex GMT Master

We opted for the classical Rolex Submariner Datejust for a few reasons. We were really interested by the history behind the Rolex Submariner. Designed for diving (up to 300m) by Rolex, the Submariner is known for its high quality, water resistance and corrosion. With the summer coming up, we thought it best to procure ourselves a luxury watch that would resist sea water.

Rolex Submariner

Another reason is that the Rolex Submariner is a good entry level timepiece for the fellows entering the luxury watch ladder. It won’t lose value over time and it could help with your next luxury timepiece acquisition. Our fellows at Watchfinder can help you with your upgrade since their moto is “Pre-owned Uncompromised”.

So Gentlemen, if you are interested in learning more about the latest trends in the luxury watch industry download their app here. If you are also looking to purchase your next luxury timepiece then visit our fellows at Watchfinder.
