Luxury Holiday Barcelona

Gentlemen and fellow followers,

As our Twitter followers have seen, Luxurymenblog took a well deserved luxury holiday. We decided to go south to visit the fabulous capital of Cataluña, Barcelona.

Sagrada Familia - Luxury Holiday Barcelona

We visited the luxury parts of town which we wanted to share with you fellow Gentlemen. We spent some time in the “Paseo de Gracia”, where all the luxury shops such as Chanel and Burberry can be found.

Chanel Barcelona

During the luxury holiday Barcelona we did do our “cultural” visits of the town and for the more arty fellow gentlemen, both the “La Perdrera” and the “Casa di Batllo” by Gaudi can be found in the “Paseo de Gracia”.

La Perdrera - Luxury Holiday Barcelona

In addition to visiting the city, we experienced the night life that the city has to offer. We had the opportunity to party in one of the best establishments during our visit before we headed north to relax on the beaches of the Costa Brava.

Luxurymenblog visited the W Hotel Barcelona, which for Gentlemen wanting to visit Barcelona is a must, the hotel can be found at the end of “Passeig de Joan de Borbo”. We experienced their Sunday Pool party, which is organised every Sunday during summer. This is where the Gentlemen of Barcelona meet up around a few cocktails and good house music.

The view is impressive; with the sea on one side you have the sea and the other a great view of the city. In addition to the Pool party with white sofas next to pool, the party continues inside at the Eclipse Bar, located on the 26th floor. The view is breath taking.

For shopping, we spent several hours in the Roca Village situated just outside the city, where you can find all the high end brands from Ralph Lauren to Timberland, at discount prices.

La Roca Village - Luxury Holiday Barcelona

During our luxury holiday Barcelona, we realised that to fully experience Barcelona, you would need a good week to taste the diversity of the city: from clubs, to bars and terraces offering amazing food and atmosphere.

Barcelona is definitely a city worth spending time in, Luxurymenblog will be back! It was a fantastic luxury holiday Barcelona 2013.

Gentlemen, where did your luxury holiday take you to this year? Do let us know @Luxurymenblog !

Daniel Wellington Summer Style 2013

Gentlemen and fellow followers,

Before packing our bags for the south of Europe, we were eagerly researching a new summer gentleman’s watch. We had a specific criteria, the watch had to be stylish, be a positive additional piece of our summer outfits as well as being preppy and elegant. It was a challenge! However after a few weeks of investigation, we came across Daniel Wellington’s watches. After visiting their Facebook (here) and Instagram pages (here), we really liked the look and feel of the brand.

We found the story behind Daniel Wellington very interesting. He was a man with a “colourful personality who had an inspiring ability to be gentlemanly, relaxed and unpretentious at the same time.” This fellow Gentleman used to wear his old Rolex on Nato straps which originated from the British Navy. This changed the style of the old rusty Rolex to a more modern and preppy look.

Daniel Wellington Watches Collection 2013

One of the added benefits of the Daniel Wellington watches is that the straps are interchangeable, meaning one day you can opt for a preppy look to go to the tennis courts and the next you can have a classic formal watch for that important client meeting.

Our personal favourite was the Canterbury with the silver ring colour as its fit very nicely with our summer preppy outfits. We have been using it both as a complementary piece to our outfits but also as an individual piece.

The Summer Preppy Look 2013
: the watch goes very nicely with a pair of colourful chinos and boat shoes for any boat and pool party that we had planned in the South of Europe. Works wonders with a tan, blue chinos, navy boat shoes and a pink shirt!

The Meeting Back to Work
: Of course the different straps that are available, are a nice addition as with one watch, you can customise the look to become more formal and classical.

Gentlemen, the summer isn’t over yet, there is still time to your upgrade your summer wardrobe!

Gentleman Summer Attire – Part 2

Gentlemen and Fellow followers,

We have been noticing quite a few of our fellows opt for a specific Gentleman summer attire called the sockless look. This has been the case since we have been experiencing for the second time, the so called “African Heatwave” which has finally brought us some warmth to the cold capital!

For those who weren’t familiar with the term, here is a simple definition from Stefano Imbert: “simply put it is men wearing shoes without socks”. Apparently this trend started back in 2012 and in New York during the winter period.

The Gentleman's Sockless Look, Gentleman Summer Attire

Although the British Summer could be considered by some as their winter, we have been observing our fellow gentleman summer attire and we have seen several distinct categories of sockless looks which we found to be very nice.

The Classic Gentleman Look

Sockles Brown Classic Look, Gentleman Summer Attire

The simplest of looks for us gentlemen and the most impactful. A definite Gentleman summer attire to have in ones wardrobe.

A nice pair of brown shoes or chinos, sockless of course, with the trousers slightly lifted above the ankle about 5-10 cm high. You can combine this look with either a white shirt and a brown belt (my personal favourite) or a blue shirt with a blue belt, if you are looking for a more formal feel.

The Black Sockless Look

Black sockless Look, Gentleman Summer Attire

Interesting combination for this look. I came across a fellow gentlemen at a party I went to in Mayfair this weekend who was able to combine a similar style. The black moccasin with a black pair of tight jeans rolled up definitely was a winning combination in our opinion.

Gentlemen and fellow followers, with the hot weather due to “return”, which Gentleman summer attire will you be adopting? Will you be adopting the sockless look to show off to your fellows?

Do let us know your thought on this look as we have been receiving mixed feedback.

Introducing…The British Belt Company

Gentlemen and fellow followers,

We have finally been experiencing the typical British summer. It also has been a busy few weeks, from club openings and parties to the Yahoo Wireless Festival in VIP. We’ve recently been in the market for a stylish gentleman’s brown belt. After two months of research, in which we have compared over 20 different styles, we came across a quintessentially British company that caught our eye, The British Belt Company.

For our Gentlemen who haven’t had the opportunity to visit our fellow friends at the British Belt Company, they are experienced leather craftsmen dating back to 1946 bringing together traditional skills with the finest leather.

They offer a very interesting range of accessories, from the famous Harris Tweed pattern to braces and wallets. We acquired the “Burley Leather Formal Belt Tan” piece to add to our collection.

  • The “Monday Meeting Look”, featured the classic white fitted shirt, blue trousers as well as the Burley belt and boat shoes. The addition of the belt helped break the look from the white and blue, but added a sense of class due to the pattern of the belt. Ideal look for a summer boardroom meeting with the new clients.

  • The “Saturday Preppy Look”, featured red preppy trousers as well as a white and brown stripped shirt, our new belt and brown shoes. Using the same belt with lighter colours tones down the formality of the belt. Ideal look when you’re planning an evening out with the fellow gentlemen.

We were really impressed with the quality of the leather and the last finishing points around the buckle. This adds that additional little piece of detail to the overall belt making it a unique piece in its genre.

Gentlemen and fellow followers, we definitely recommend you taking a look at The British Belt Company if you are planning to buy a quality piece for your wardrobe.

Luxury Socks: A Necessity – Part II

Luxury Socks

Gentlemen and fellow followers, with the cold weather still persisting (even though we are now officially in spring), there are still some unwritten rules that should be mentioned with regards to your luxury gentlemen socks. Previously, we touched upon the different luxury materials that you can choose from – Luxury Socks: A Necessity Part I here.

There are several core “rules” that should be considered when you are planning your outfit first thing every morning.

I) Match your colours

This does seem like a basic, however the amount of times I have been sitting on the tube or in meetings and have noticed my fellow gentlemen forgetting the number 1 rule. This is truly a shame as you would have spent a lot of time and effort working on your look and it is the small detail that can make or break your style.

“Luxury socks should compliment or contrast with your outfit, but never clash with it”

Once you understand the colours, then you can experiment. As Drakes Co-founder mentioned “Men should be stylish, not fashionable”. You can read the full article here.

II) Pairing your socks

When you buy socks, they tend to come in pairs. Yet, some of us still want to merge two families together.

Although you might think this is a good idea at 6.30am, that feeling will quickly fade away once a fellow gentlemen will notice this during the course of that very important meeting or client diner.

So gentlemen, do spend those extra 2 minutes to pair those luxury socks!

III) Keeping them clean

This might sound like an obvious rule but it is often forgotten or de-prioritised for more important aspects of ones attire. If the luxury sock is starting to look warn out, this is most likely the case.

Don’t hold on to a pair that is of “sentimental value”, it’s definitely not worth the look! As Mitchelli points out “socks must BE clean and the days of dyeing and darning are long gone!”

IV) Wear over the calf socks

This is a rule that has registered some interest of the past few years in the circle of gentlemen. For some, seeing the leg of a fellow is most unappealing and classy. Parisgentlemen points that, most sources agree with this statement and that the leg should never show.

The reason behind wearing your luxury socks high, is for when you sit down, your trousers on average will rise by 5-6cm, so you should make sure that your socks can cope, meaning you should have 7-8cm of sock height.

V) Sports socks are for…Sport!

Luxury socks are not sports socks, and sport socks are not luxury socks. Wear the right type of sock for each occasion. All too often you will help notice a fellow gentlemen wearing a nice pin stripped suit with white socks!

I’ve found an interesting small video produced by GQ socks experts, Adam rapoport and Jim Moore, talking about how to match socks and personalties:

Gentlemen, time to sock up!

Luxury Socks: A Necessity – Part I

luxury men socks

Gentlemen and fellow followers, having written about different methods to pimp your suit (part I and part II), there is one aspect of a gentlemen’s look on which I haven’t yet touched upon – a gentleman’s sock.

In the past, socks used to be seen more as an accessory and a functional piece rather than a luxury item to display ones personality. Recently, there has been a shift and a gentlemen’s sock is being seen and used as an additional piece of one’s attire to add expression to one’s overall look.

Interestingly, this has been recognised by some of the top leaders, for example Hunter Walk from Youtube mentioned “I have been in meetings where people look down and notice my socks, and there is this universal sign, almost like a gang sign, where they nod and pull up their pant leg a little to show off their socks”. Even the top end of the teck society have recognised that “Girls notice the sock quality of men” said Matt Graves, communication director at Twitter (full article here).

men socks range

Many gentlemen are welcoming this new wave of style; socks can serve as the bridge between the luxury shoe and the classy suit. This is rule number 6 from the men’s dress code. The first step to find your sock is to choose the type of fabric you are comfortable with:

  • Luxury Wool socks: considered by most a luxurious material as it keeps your feet warm during the cold winter days and has the added benefit of keeping your feet cool in the summer. The wool sock fabric is high maintenance, when compared to others, as it requires special care when washing it.
  • Premium Cotton socks: less expensive that wool socks, cotton socks are more functional as it is easier to launder. It also holds the form of your foot well and is much cooler than wool socks, which are often preferred in summer.
  • High end Lisle socks: these socks have a superior strength and durability compared to the two previous types. This is because there is an extra twister per inch than ordinary socks. The lisle socks have two threads twisted in opposite directions to create one combined thread. A definite luxury choice.
  • Luxury Silk and Cashmere socks: the top end of the sock charter for gentlemen. These should be taken care of however due to the material these need to be laundered in cold water and dried without heat for the best longevity. Remember, you should iron your Cashmere socks whilst there are still damp to keep the look. For Silk, don’t use a steam iron as this will harm the fabric!

Gentlemen and fellow followers which luxury socks will you be wearing?
